Is Brian Schottenheimer Already On The Dallas Cowboys Hot Seat?

Is Brian Schottenheimer already on the Dallas Cowboys hot seat? After Thursday’s 24-16 home loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it’s a fair question. Dallas is 2-3, and an ugly performance has put Schottenheimer’s leadership and Dak Prescott’s offense under scrutiny.

The answer needs some restraint: the pressure is real, but the public reporting doesn’t establish that Jerry Jones is preparing to replace his head coach.

Why The Heat Is Building

Dallas gave away the ball three times and didn’t force a turnover. Tampa Bay rushed for 241 yards, while the Cowboys managed just 16 points. That combination makes it hard to pin the result on one coordinator or one bad bounce.

Schottenheimer oversees the whole operation. When the offense stalls, the defense gets pushed around and a kickoff return ends in a fumble, the head coach has to answer for the collective failure.

There’s also a difference between losing a competitive game and wasting an opportunity against a team that arrived without a win. The Cowboys did the latter, and Jones publicly expressed his frustration afterward.

What Jones’ Position Actually Tells Us

The team’s Friday reporting said Jones wasn’t considering sweeping changes heading into Week 6. Jones also continued backing defensive coordinator Christian Parker after the loss.

That suggests the current staff is being asked to solve the problems. It doesn’t guarantee anyone’s long-term future, but it’s stronger evidence than assuming an angry owner means an imminent firing.

Schottenheimer said Friday that Dallas was reviewing all three phases and considering adjustments, including its outside-linebacker rotation. Specific coaching or depth-chart changes weren’t detailed in that report.

The Next Test Is Improvement

As our earlier coverage of Schottenheimer’s concerns about pass coverage showed, the warning signs preceded the Tampa Bay loss. Identifying them hasn’t been enough.

Dallas next visits Green Bay on Oct. 18. The useful questions are whether the Cowboys protect the ball, contain the run and turn their self-evaluation into better execution.

So, is Schottenheimer on the hot seat? In terms of scrutiny, absolutely. In terms of a verified threat to his job, the available evidence stops short. His best answer now is a team that looks better prepared and plays cleaner football.
