Marcel Reed threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns as No. 8 Texas A&M crushed Missouri State 50-0 and turned its opener into a statement win.

No. 8 Texas A&M didn’t play a perfect game Saturday night. It didn’t need to.

Marcel Reed threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns, the Aggies piled up 505 total yards, and Mike Elko’s defense suffocated Missouri State in a 50-0 season-opening win at Kyle Field. The margin was overwhelming, even with enough early mistakes to give Texas A&M something to clean up before the schedule gets tougher.

Reed completed 21 of 30 passes, a 70 percent completion rate, and exited early in the fourth quarter with the game long decided. His first touchdown came on Texas A&M’s opening possession, when he found transfer receiver Isaiah Horton for a 15-yard score.

Horton made an immediate impact in his Aggies debut, finishing with four catches for a game-high 76 yards.

Mario Craver added five receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown, scoring on a 12-yard grab late in the second quarter to send Texas A&M into halftime with a 19-0 lead.

Then the Aggies broke it open.

Terry Bussey scored on a 10-yard run early in the second half. Jamarion Morrow followed with a 2-yard touchdown, and freshman Carsyn Baker turned his first collegiate carry into a 12-yard score.

Backup quarterback Brady Hart added another touchdown pass after replacing Reed.

The bigger story, though, may have been Texas A&M’s defense.

Missouri State finished with just 67 total yards and four first downs. The Bears were held to 37 rushing yards and never seriously threatened the end zone. Noah Mikhail led the Aggies with seven tackles, while Ryan Henderson recorded two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.

The only real concern came up front.

Texas A&M’s rebuilt offensive line allowed two sacks and committed multiple penalties as the Aggies finished with eight flags for 80 yards. That’s the kind of sloppiness Elko will want corrected quickly.

Still, this was domination.

Texas A&M won by 50, posted a shutout, controlled both lines for most of the night and got meaningful production from several newcomers.

Next comes a much bigger test.

Arizona State visits Kyle Field next Saturday after opening its season with a 70-7 win over Morgan State. For the Aggies, that’s when the margin for error gets considerably smaller.
