The 2026 Rocket Classic Thursday preview begins with a strange mix of excitement and finality. Detroit Golf Club is hosting its last scheduled PGA Tour event, but this doesn’t feel like a quiet farewell. The field is stacked, the course has teeth it didn’t have before and the FedEx Cup pressure is about to turn Thursday into a four-hour anxiety attack for half the field.

Detroit deserved a sendoff with some star power, and it finally got one.

Cameron Young, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler are among the biggest names chasing the trophy. The field includes 10 major champions and 21 players ranked inside the world’s top 50, making this arguably the strongest Rocket Classic lineup ever assembled.

The man everyone should be watching on Thursday is Young.

He enters Detroit ranked No. 3 in both the world and the FedEx Cup standings after finishing runner-up at The Open Championship. He’s already won twice in 2026, capturing The Players Championship and Cadillac Championship, and he owns finishes of second and sixth in previous Rocket Classic appearances. This isn’t a rebuilding week for Young. It’s another chance to remind everyone that he’s become one of the Tour’s most dangerous players.

Then there’s Jackson Koivun, the 21-year-old rookie who apparently didn’t receive the memo about needing time to adjust to professional golf.

Koivun won the 3M Open in only his third professional start, closing with a 5-under 66 to finish at a tournament-record 25-under par. He beat Scottie Scheffler by three shots, collected 500 FedEx Cup points and jumped to No. 70 in the standings. Now comes the harder part: doing it again after spending several days being treated like golf’s next superstar.

Wyndham Clark also arrives with something to prove. Clark has already won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and U.S. Open this season, sits fourth in the FedEx Cup standings and had posted six consecutive top-13 finishes before missing the cut at Royal Birkdale. His power and improved iron play make him an obvious threat if Thursday becomes another birdie sprint.

Don’t assume the winning formula will be identical to previous years, though.

Detroit Golf Club’s renovated North Course now measures 7,328 yards and plays to a par 70. A reported $16 million transformation converted the former par-5 seventh and 17th holes into long par 4s, meaning players have two fewer automatic birdie opportunities. The old strategy of blasting driver, attacking every flag and waiting for the putter to catch fire might not be enough anymore.

Defending champion Aldrich Potgieter still has the length to overwhelm the place, while Schauffele, Cantlay and Russell Henley possess the control needed to survive the tighter setup. Spieth and Fowler bring the name recognition, but both will need to avoid the loose drives and short-putting disasters that can ruin a round before Thursday afternoon.

Sunny conditions and temperatures climbing into the upper 80s could help the renovated course become firmer as the day progresses, potentially giving the morning wave a slight advantage.

The Rocket Classic is leaving Detroit after Sunday. Before it goes, however, the PGA Tour has delivered one final shootout with stars, rising phenoms and desperate playoff hopefuls.

Thursday won’t decide the champion, but it could bury plenty of them.
