The Cowboys turned Micah Parsons into multiple defensive pieces, but Dallas now has to prove depth can replace a superstar.

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t just trade Micah Parsons. They detonated the defense, hit reset and dared everyone to judge the results later.

After draft weekend, Dallas believes it turned one All-Pro pass rusher into the foundation of a new-look unit. Parsons went to the Packers, while the Cowboys’ return eventually became Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Malachi Lawrence, Devin Moore and LT Overton. Dallas also moved Mazi Smith and premium draft capital as part of the larger reshuffle.

That’s not a small pivot. That’s a full identity change.

Stephen Jones said the Cowboys feel “really good” about the move, pointing to Williams and Clark as proven leaders and high-level interior defenders. Williams, 28, brings four Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro résumé. Clark adds three Pro Bowls of his own and gives Dallas another veteran presence up front.

The argument from the Cowboys is simple: one elite player wasn’t enough. Four or five quality pieces might be.

It’s bold. It’s also risky.

Parsons is the kind of player offensive coordinators build protection plans around. He changes games without needing help. None of the players Dallas acquired individually carries that same week-wrecking fear factor.

But the Cowboys weren’t exactly dominating defensively with Parsons last year. The unit was historically bad, and new coordinator Christian Parker is shifting Dallas into a 3-4 defense. That makes the additions of Williams, Clark, Lawrence and Overton more than just roster filler. They’re scheme-defining pieces.

Now comes the uncomfortable truth: Dallas doesn’t need this defense to be elite right away. It just can’t be a disaster.

If Dak Prescott and the offense hold up, a competent defense could put the Cowboys back in the NFC mix. But if Parsons terrorizes quarterbacks in Green Bay while Dallas struggles to find pressure, this “win” won’t age quietly.

The Cowboys made their bet. Now they’ve got to cash it.
