Jerry Jones says Dallas’ defensive rebuild could change everything after adding Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson, and more to fix last season’s biggest flaw.
Jerry Jones isn’t exactly whispering about the Dallas Cowboys’ defense. He’s selling it like a man who believes this side of the ball could reshape the entire season.
The Cowboys owner and general manager made it clear he sees this offseason’s defensive makeover as more than a routine reset. In his mind, it’s potentially transformational.

“What we’ve done on defense, plus what we have set up for the draft, plus what we have coming back from our veteran defensive players that really didn’t play that much last year, injury issues, things like that, gives us a lot of promise,” Jones said.
That quote says everything about how Dallas is framing this moment. The Cowboys didn’t just patch holes. They attacked a glaring weakness that wrecked too many Sundays in 2025. Jones admitted as much when he added, “When you have the challenges we had last year, there’s no place to go but up on the defensive side of the ball.”
And honestly, he’s not wrong.
Dallas went into the offseason needing speed, depth, and more punch across the board. The front office answered by trading for Rashan Gary and adding Otito Ogbonnia, Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, P.J. Locke, and Tyrus Wheat. That’s a real effort to rebuild the attitude and versatility of the unit, not just the depth chart.
The most revealing quote from Jones might have been the bluntest one of all: “Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would’ve had ourselves, I think, a real playoff run.”
That’s not just an admission. It’s an indictment of what Dallas put on the field defensively last season.

Now the pressure shifts. Jerry Jones has made the bet. He believes these Cowboys defensive additions can flip the script, especially when paired with help in the NFL Draft and healthier returning veterans.
Talk is cheap in March. But Jones just made it clear he thinks this defense could change everything.
