Xavier Legette Trade Buzz Grows as Panthers Weigh Reset at Wide Receiver

by | Feb 11, 2026 | Blog, Carolinas

The Carolina Panthers may soon face a tough but realistic decision with Xavier Legette. Entering his third NFL season, Legette’s role has diminished after an uneven start to his pro career. Once viewed as a long-term piece after being selected in the first round, he now finds himself fighting for snaps as younger options emerge and the depth chart reshapes itself in Carolina.

Legette’s physical profile still jumps off the page. At 6-foot-1 and over 220 pounds, he brings size, straight-line speed, and contested-catch potential that teams covet. However, production hasn’t followed. After a promising college breakout at South Carolina, consistency and separation have been hard to come by in the NFL, even as the Panthers have searched for reliable pass catchers around Bryce Young.

That’s why a change of scenery could benefit both sides. The Pittsburgh Steelers stand out as a particularly intriguing fit. Pittsburgh has a long track record of developing wide receivers and maximizing raw traits, and pairing Legette with a proven veteran like DK Metcalf could accelerate his growth. Even with Mike Tomlin no longer in the picture, the organizational DNA remains receiver-friendly.

Other teams would likely explore the upside as well. The Kansas City Chiefs are always hunting affordable weapons for Patrick Mahomes, while the San Francisco 49ers could be staring at vacancies with Brandon Aiyuk potentially on the move and Jauan Jennings hitting free agency. The Buffalo Bills, meanwhile, continue to search for pass-catching help to complement Josh Allen.

Carolina wouldn’t land a premium return, but flipping Legette for a mid-round pick could be a clean reset. For a former first-rounder still rich in tools, the trade market is likely very real.
