Will Trevon Diggs Save the Cowboys’ Collapsing Defense? He Says He’s Ready …But ‘They Make the Rules’

FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys are limping toward the playoffs, and their defense is taking the hits.

Coming off an embarrassing 44-point collapse to the Detroit Lions—their worst defensive outing of the season—the Cowboys now rank No. 29 in total defense, No. 31 in scoring defense, and are dead last in passing yards allowed per game. That’s right—no one in the NFL gives up more through the air than Dallas.

But help might finally be on the way.

After missing seven straight games with a concussion and knee injury, Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs is officially questionable for Sunday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. And if you ask Diggs himself? He’s ready.

“Yeah, yeah. Why ya’ll asking me? Ask them,” Diggs said Friday when asked about his Week 15 availability. “I don’t make the rules. That’s them. They’ve got to answer that question. But I’m ready, though.”

The fifth-year veteran’s response was as cryptic as it was telling. Diggs says he felt ready to return last week, but the coaching and medical staff weren’t sold. He admitted it’s been tough watching from the sidelines as the Cowboys’ secondary continues to get picked apart.

“It’s been hard,” he said. “You want to get back out there, but people feel how they feel. Just got to roll with the punches and keep pushing forward.”

In six games this season, Diggs has registered 18 tackles and one tackle for loss—but it’s the plays he prevents that Dallas has missed most. Since his absence, opposing quarterbacks have shredded the Cowboys through the air, and the once-feared Dallas defense has crumbled into a liability.

To make matters worse, Diggs has only played 19 games over the past three seasons due to various injuries. Questions about his long-term durability are starting to bubble up, even as his return looms.

Still, his presence Sunday night could be the spark this defense desperately needs. The Vikings bring a dangerous passing attack, and if Diggs can suit up, it may be Dallas’ only shot at slowing them down.

Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. Whether or not No. 7 is back on the field? That’s still up to “them.”
