College football’s Week 6 delivered an earthquake-level shakeup, headlined by a historic stunner: the winless UCLA Bruins knocked off No. 7 Penn State, 42-37, in what CBS Sports Research says is just the fifth time ever that a team 0-4 or worse beat an AP Top-10 team—and the first time since 1985.
This wasn’t just any upset. UCLA had not led in a single game all season prior to Saturday. But that changed fast, as the Bruins punched Penn State in the mouth early with a 10-0 lead and never looked back. James Franklin’s team has now dropped completely out of the Top 25, a freefall few saw coming.
Arch Manning Overwhelmed in SEC Debut as Florida Drops Texas
If that wasn’t enough chaos for one Saturday, Arch Manning’s much-anticipated first SEC road start went sideways in Gainesville. The No. 9 Texas Longhorns were shocked by Florida, 29-21, in a game where Manning was sacked twice on the final drive and failed to connect on a potential game-tying deep ball.
The Gators were 1-3 entering the game, but true freshman Dallas Wilson torched the Longhorns with two touchdown receptions. Texas, which started the season ranked No. 1, has now tumbled completely out of the Top 25.
Preseason Favorites Imploding: By the Numbers
-
Texas (Preseason No. 1), Penn State (No. 2), and Clemson (No. 4) are now a combined 8-7 this season.
-
That trio has only one combined win over a Power 4 opponent.
-
Penn State and Texas both dropped entirely out of the rankings in Week 7.
That’s not a slump. That’s a meltdown.
More Carnage: Iowa State, Vandy Fall Flat
No. 14 Iowa State was another big-name casualty. The Cyclones went down 17-0 early against Cincinnati and couldn’t claw their way back, falling 38-30. They plummeted eight spots to No. 22.
Meanwhile, No. 16 Vanderbilt couldn’t replicate Diego Pavia’s Week 5 magic. They fell to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 30-14, as the Crimson Tide climbed to No. 8.
