The Dallas Cowboys finally got some good news to pair with the very bad this week. Losing starting cornerback DaRon Bland to injured reserve with a foot injury gutted an already thin secondary. But just as one Pro Bowler goes down, another might be on his way back.
Trevon Diggs, the 2021 NFL interception king and former All-Pro, is trending toward a return and could start as soon as this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to insider Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan. Diggs hasn’t played since Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers, sidelined by a concussion and lingering knee issues while struggling to find a defined role in Matt Eberflus’ scheme.
Bryan Broaddus tells @ZachWolchuk & @gavindawson on the @gbagnation that #DallasCowboys CB Trevon Diggs is expected to start this week:
"Just talked to a couple folks. … It sounds like he's going to get the opportunity to get elevated this week, and start for you on Sunday." pic.twitter.com/ZVxrygIC8E

That cocktail of injuries, on-field struggles, and schematic friction led to a growing belief that Diggs had played his last snap in Dallas. But Broaddus poured cold water on that narrative, saying Diggs stacked a strong week of practice and has the inside track to be activated from IR and immediately thrown into the starting lineup.
Bland’s loss magnifies the urgency. The versatile defensive back not only stabilized the Cowboys’ secondary but was a key playmaker on the back end. Without him, Dallas faces the prospect of patching things together in a stretch run where every snap matters. Plugging a healthy and motivated Trevon Diggs back into the lineup might be the only swing big enough to keep this defense from wobbling.
Off the field, the situation has clearly worn on Diggs.
NFL reporter Jane Slater has noted that he’s been “affected” by the speculation around his injury timeline and the rumors sparked by a concussion suffered at home. Add in his uneven play this season and constant chatter about his future with the team, and you’ve got a corner who’s been under the microscope even while he’s been off the field.
The opportunity now is obvious: change the conversation.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has made it clear he’s not punting on the season; he wants to win down the stretch. That mindset makes playing Diggs a no-brainer. If he can step in, stabilize the secondary and flash even a glimpse of his ball-hawking form, it doesn’t just help Dallas – it resets his own narrative heading into 2026.
For a Cowboys team desperate for answers on the back end, and a former All-Pro desperate for a reset, Sunday might be the perfect crossroads.
