The Dallas Stars opened their season with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night, spoiling the home debut of new Jets center Jonathan Toews and marking a successful return for Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan.
Mikko Rantanen led the way for Dallas with a goal and two assists, while Jason Robertson chipped in a goal and an assist of his own. Nils Lundkvist, Tyler Seguin, and Wyatt Johnston also scored as the Stars built a commanding 5-1 lead early in the third period. Jake Oettinger stopped 21 shots to preserve the win.
Kyle Connor almost single-handedly brought Winnipeg back, netting all three of the Jets’ third-period goals for a hat trick. Connor, who just signed an eight-year, $96 million contract extension on Wednesday, scored twice shorthanded as Winnipeg cut the deficit to one before running out of time. Mark Scheifele assisted on all three goals, while Morgan Barron also tallied for the Jets.
The victory marked a strong start for Gulutzan, who returned to the Stars bench after serving as an assistant in Edmonton for seven seasons. His previous stint as Dallas head coach ran from 2011 to 2013.
