The South Florida Bulls upset a ranked opponent for the second straight week with an 18-16 last-minute win over the No. 13 Florida Gators at the Swamp in Gainesville on Saturday.
Undisciplined play by the Gators contributed 11 penalties for 103 yards, including two massive infractions on the final drive. There were also situations where Florida seemed to lose control of all clock management. Nico Gramatica hit a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the game to notch the Bulls’ (2-0) first win over the Gators (1-1) in five tries. This one hurts Florida and will put coach Billy Napier on the hot seat.
“There’s no excuse here,” Napier said. “I’m not up here to make excuses.”
In the final minutes of the game, needing to run the clock with a 16-15 lead, Napier called two pass plays that went incomplete, both to Vernell Brown III. That began the Florida meltdown. After missing a go-ahead field goal on their previous offensive possession, the Bulls got the ball back with 2:25 left in the game. The Florida defense then allowed a 29-yard pass to Alvon Isaac that put the ball at the FLA 32, then a 12-yard pass to Joshua Porter that put the ball at the FLA 20 with 1:45 remaining. After the Bulls got the ball to the FLA 8-yard line, Florida used its remaining two timeouts, but it was too late. Two more short runs set Gramatica up for his game-winner.
Florida also allowed a 66-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, with the defense confused and looking at their own sideline when the ball was snapped. The Gators’ offense finished with 355 yards and just one touchdown and three field goals to show for it.
“We created it. We deserve it,” Napier said. “If you play football like that, you’re going to be criticized. It comes with the territory, right? Only thing you can do is go get it fixed, and that’s what we’ll start working on (Sunday).”
With the loss, Napier falls to 20-20, including 14-7 at home. The Gators start the year 1-1 for their fourth straight year.
“These guys I’ve bled with, cried with,” Florida cornerback Devin Moore said. “There have been a lot of long nights, so I’m very motivated — me and other people on the team. Everyone can hold everyone accountable. … I’m ready to get back to work, clean this film up, and just improve.”
Credit the Bulls in Alex Golesh’s third year.
“A bunch of guys that bought into a vision when it wasn’t super cool,” Golesh said.
Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown finished 23 of 36 for 236 yards and a touchdown and added 66 yards on 17 carries. Florida’s DJ Lagway ended his day 23 of 33 for 222 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Next up, the Bulls travel to Miami to play the No. 5 Hurricanes in their third straight game against a ranked opponent on Saturday, while the Gators head to Baton Rouge to take on the No. 3 LSU Tigers, also on Saturday.
