Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi Likely Done for the Season

The Texas Rangers and their fans got some heartbreaking news on Tuesday.

While most were chomping at the bit to find the Dallas Cowboys’ final 53-man roster announcement at the 4 p.m. CT deadline, the Rangers were also making news of a different kind.

Right-handed pitcher and bright spot of the 2025 season has a rotator cuff strain that will likely shelve him for the rest of the year, per president of baseball operations Chris Young.

Eovaldi, 35, has been one of the best pitchers of the major leagues this year when healthy.

He’s posted an 11-3 mark with a 1.73 ERA across 22 starts with 129 strikeouts over 130 innings. His ERA is best among pitchers with at least 100 innings this season, while his 21.8 percent strikeout-minus-walk rate is tied with teammate Jacob deGrom for seventh-best in the majors.

Eovaldi missed time in June with right elbow inflammation, but returned in July and August and allowed just 10 earned runs in his past nine starts.

It’s just the latest heartbreak for the fanbase of a 66-67 team that’s 5.5 games back of the last AL Wild Card spot. Eovaldi is just the latest on a list of Rangers players who have suffered recent injuries, including 2B Marcus Semien with a left foot fracture, 1B Jake Burger with a left wrist sprain and OF Evan Carter with a right wrist fracture.

Semien and Carter are both also expected to be done for the season. That 2023 World Series championship seems farther and farther away for a team that will likely lose its manager, Bruce Bochy, to retirement after the season.
