The writing may already be on the wall for Rachaad White in Tampa Bay.

The impending free-agent running back sparked offseason buzz after posting what appeared to be a farewell message to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Instagram, a move first noted by Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. While White stopped short of explicitly announcing his departure, the tone was unmistakable: he sounds like a player preparing for a new chapter elsewhere in 2026.

That possibility would have felt unthinkable just a year ago. A former third-round pick, White once looked like the long-term answer in the Bucs’ backfield. As a rookie alongside Tom Brady, he totaled 771 yards from scrimmage. In 2023, with Baker Mayfield under center, White broke out in a big way, piling up 1,539 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns while emerging as one of the league’s more reliable dual-threat backs.

Then the ground shifted.

Tampa Bay’s decision to draft Bucky Irving in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft changed everything. By season’s end, Irving had seized the lead role, finishing his rookie campaign with more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns. White still produced – 1,006 total yards and nine scores – but the offense increasingly belonged to Irving. When Irving missed time this past season, White failed to capitalize, posting one of the least efficient years of his career at just 4.6 yards per touch.

Looking ahead, the Buccaneers’ running back room is suddenly thin. Sean Tucker is headed for restricted free agency, leaving Irving as the only clear-cut back under contract for 2026. Tampa Bay has shown it can juggle multiple backs, so a reunion with White isn’t impossible – but his social media message suggests he’s already emotionally moved on.

If White does hit the open market, interest won’t be an issue. His résumé as a starter and his pass-catching chops make him attractive in today’s NFL. He’ll enter a crowded free-agent class that includes Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker, Travis Etienne, and Javonte Williams – but White’s versatility could help him stand out.

For now, the Buccaneers haven’t closed the door. Rachaad White, however, looks like he’s already stepping through it.
