Ricky Castillo fired a bogey-free 67 to win the Puerto Rico Open, while 18-year-old Blades Brown’s triple bogey ended his bid for history.
The Puerto Rico Open delivered high drama Sunday on the PGA TOUR, and when the dust settled, it was Ricky Castillo celebrating his first career PGA TOUR victory. At the same time, 18-year-old sensation Blades Brown saw a historic opportunity slip away.
Castillo closed with a 5-under 67 at Grand Reserve Golf Club, finishing 17-under-par (271) to secure the win by one shot over Chandler Blanchet, who birdied the final hole for his own 67.
For Castillo, the breakthrough moment came after missing another opportunity just days earlier. The rising PGA TOUR pro narrowly failed to qualify for the $20 million Signature Event at Bay Hill, falling short in the FedEx Cup standings by only 11 points.
Instead of dwelling on that disappointment, he redirected his focus toward Puerto Rico — and it paid off.
“It’s really cool to put into words to be able to win my first event,” Castillo said after the round. “I felt like I wanted to be in Bay Hill and I decided to just come out here and play this and ended up winning, so it all works out in the end. Yeah, surreal week.”
The turning point of the tournament came midway through the back nine.
Brown, attempting to become the youngest PGA TOUR winner in nearly a century, held a one-shot lead with six holes remaining. But disaster struck at the par-4 13th.
After finding a bunker off the tee, Brown’s approach drifted toward the water. His recovery attempt was overly aggressive, leading to a difficult chip and a missed putt that resulted in triple bogey.
In a matter of minutes, the leaderboard flipped.
While Brown unraveled, Castillo seized the moment with back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14, including a clutch 12-foot birdie putt that ignited his charge toward the trophy.
Brown recovered slightly with a birdie on the final hole to finish third with a 69, earning his first career PGA TOUR top-10 finish.
Meanwhile, John Daly II, son of two-time major champion John Daly, briefly entered contention before stumbling on the back nine with five bogeys in seven holes, finishing with a 74.
Still, Daly remained positive afterward.
“I learned that you’ve got to put four rounds together and it’s not easy out here,” he said. “But very happy, not mad at all. Just a great day, great week.”
For Castillo, the victory also secures a spot in the PGA Championship, marking a career-changing moment in what he called a “surreal week.”
