The New Orleans Pelicans entered Monday night facing one of the NBA’s hottest teams. They reportedly left with their most impressive victory of the young season.

New Orleans edged the previously unbeaten Memphis Grizzlies 135-134 in overtime at FedExForum, according to the updated season game log, extending its winning streak to three games after opening the season with four consecutive losses.

The result improved the Pelicans to 3-4 and ended Memphis’ pursuit of a franchise-record seventh consecutive victory to begin the season.

Zion Williamson and Karlo Matković were listed as New Orleans’ leading scorers with 25 points apiece, giving the Pelicans important production against one of the league’s strongest early-season opponents.

Williamson also led New Orleans with 11 rebounds, while Jeremiah Fears recorded a team-high seven assists.

For the Pelicans, the victory represented another step forward under new head coach Jamahl Mosley.

New Orleans had struggled to close games during its 0-4 start, losing three of those contests by six points or fewer.

But the Pelicans began turning things around with consecutive double-digit home victories against Sacramento and Atlanta.

Monday presented a much more difficult assignment.

Memphis entered the game 6-0 after matching its best start in franchise history. The Grizzlies had also been producing some of the league’s most explosive offensive performances.

Rookie Cameron Boozer, veteran guard Ty Jerome and a deep supporting cast had helped Memphis establish itself as an early Western Conference contender.

The Pelicans weren’t intimidated.

New Orleans opened the game with 34 first-quarter points and remained competitive throughout an entertaining first half.

Memphis held a 62-59 lead at halftime before the Pelicans responded with a 41-point third quarter.

That offensive burst gave New Orleans a 100-95 advantage entering the final period.

But Memphis rallied behind Jerome, whose late fourth-quarter scoring helped erase the deficit.

Jerome made a driving shot with four seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at 124 and forcing overtime.

The extra session provided another test of New Orleans’ composure.

For a team that had already experienced several painful close losses, surviving a tight finish against an unbeaten opponent would represent significant progress.

The Pelicans’ recent improvement has been driven by more balanced scoring, aggressive defense and contributions throughout the rotation.

Monday’s performance continued that trend, with Williamson and Matković providing the scoring foundation.

New Orleans returns home Wednesday, November 4, to face the Utah Jazz at Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans then host Minnesota on Friday before beginning another road trip.

After such a difficult opening week, New Orleans is suddenly showing signs of becoming a much more competitive team.

And if Monday’s overtime result holds through final box-score verification, the Pelicans will have delivered one of the NBA’s biggest early-season surprises.
