Patriots Could Upset History with Win Over Tua, Dolphins on Sunday

The New England Patriots have never beaten the Miami Dolphins with Tua Tagovailoa under center. It’s an unlikely list of quarterbacks who have at least a seven-game winning streak over the Pats. Tua appears on the list of three Pro Football Hall of Famers that include Dan Marino, who held an 11-game winning streak over New England from 1989-1995, John Elway, who won 10 games in a row over the Patriots from 1984-1998, Joe Namath, also with a 10-game stretch of beating New England from 1966-1972 and Tua, with a seven-game streak from 2020-2024.

Sunday could be history in the making as the 0-1 Patriots come to town to face the 0-1 Dolphins, but the win for New England somehow seems more likely if we consider the season’s first game for Miami, which was embarrassed by the Colts in Week 1.

But there’s another streak that could end that goes the other way. Tua is 0-2 against Vrabel-led teams. Those two games are, of course, when Vrabel was coach of the Titans.

One of those streaks will be broken on Sunday. But CBS Sports writer Garrett Podell thinks it will go the Patriots’ way.

“The underdog Patriots will upset the host Dolphins, who are currently 1.5-point favorites, per FanDuel Sportsbook, to get to 1-1 this week. New England quarterback Drake Maye, while looking uneven at times, threw for a career-high 287 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception with 30 completions on 46 pass attempts,” Podell wrote. “Maye’s one interception was an overthrow targeted toward new No. 1 wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but there’s a good chance that duo’s connection could be much improved after finally getting out there in a real game together.

“Miami could also be down a starting offensive lineman with right tackle Austin Jackson (toe) not practicing on Wednesday or Thursday this week. That could mean another big week for new Patriots edge rusher Harold Landry III, who racked up two-and-a-half sacks of Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith in Week 1 — the most in a New England debut all time.”

Tua will have to improve his level of play from Week 1 drastically after an abysmal turnover-laden performance against the Colts. But he also knows he has to stay within the playbook.

“As competitors, in a way, that’s sort of what got you here,” Tagovailoa said, “but now it’s trusting that I can’t do this by myself. It’s almost like golf. When guys golf, that’s on them whether they win or lose. … For us, if one guy makes a mistake, can we make it right? Sure, but that’s not how this league works. Everyone knows their keys, everyone knows what to do, where to go, where to be and if one of us messes up, it can screw up the entire play or it can get us out of our flow and kind of where we don’t want to be.”

Which streak gets broken this weekend? We’ll find out on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
