For the first time in over a decade, the Kansas City Chiefs will not be part of the NFL postseason — and the final blow came with a gut-wrenching twist.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a left knee injury during Sunday’s 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes was attempting to lead a late comeback drive when he rolled to his right and was taken down awkwardly by a defender, appearing to hyperextend his knee as he hit the ground.
The reigning MVP stayed on the turf for several tense moments before being helped to the sideline, visibly limping. Gardner Minshew II stepped in to finish the game, but his interception on the final drive sealed the Chiefs’ fate.
After the game the Chiefs’ worst fears were realized when it was learned that Mahomes has torn his ACL and is done for the rest of the season.
Mahomes ended the game 16-of-28 for 189 yards, with one interception and a first-quarter rushing touchdown – one of the few bright spots in a grim afternoon for Kansas City.
The loss not only knocked the Chiefs to a disappointing 8-9 finish, but with wins by both the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City was officially eliminated from playoff contention – a sentence that hasn’t been typed since the 2014 season.
It’s a brutal ending for a franchise that’s dominated the AFC for nearly a decade. Under Mahomes, the Chiefs had made the AFC Championship every year since 2018, claiming two Super Bowl titles and winning nine straight AFC West crowns. But 2025 told a different story … one riddled with injuries, inconsistencies, and off-field drama.
This latest setback might be the final straw in a season gone off the rails. With Mahomes done, the offseason outlook becomes even murkier for head coach Andy Reid and a front office that’s suddenly facing tough questions for the first time in years.
The only thing that’s certain? The Chiefs dynasty, as we’ve known it, has hit a massive speed bump – and possibly a breaking point.
