The Dallas Cowboys appear ready to make a major commitment to one of the league’s rising wide receivers. According to ESPN, Dallas is expected to place the franchise tag on George Pickens, signaling that the Pro Bowl pass catcher will remain in silver and blue next season.
The franchise tag, projected to be worth around $28 million, would secure Pickens for at least one more year while giving both sides time to work toward a long-term extension. For the Cowboys, it’s a clear message: Pickens is viewed as a core piece of the offense moving forward.
Owner Jerry Jones didn’t hide his enthusiasm when recently discussing Pickens’ future.
“He’s better than what he’s shown so far, as far as what he can contribute to our team,” Jones said. “I’m looking forward to getting things worked out so George can be a Cowboy for a long time.”
Pickens originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2022 NFL Draft before being dealt to Dallas after three productive seasons. His first year with the Cowboys proved to be a career-defining one. Pickens posted personal bests across the board, hauling in 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite Dallas finishing 7-9-1 and missing the playoffs, Pickens’ performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection.
One of the more notable reactions has come from his star teammate CeeDee Lamb, who made it clear that contract comparisons won’t create tension in the locker room.
“I just want my man to get what he deserves,” Lamb said during Super Bowl radio row. “If he gets more than me, I’m going to congratulate him on that.”
Lamb added that winning remains the ultimate goal, emphasizing that production eventually takes care of the financial side.
With Pickens entering his prime and Dallas eager to lock in elite offensive talent, the franchise tag feels less like a stopgap and more like the first step toward a long-term deal. If the Cowboys get their way, Pickens won’t just be tagged … he’ll be part of their future for years to come.
