Carolina needs linebacker help, but using the No. 19 pick on Texas Tech standout Jacob Rodriguez would be a risky reach in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Carolina Panthers clearly have interest in Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, but interest and draft value aren’t always the same thing. As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, Carolina appears to be doing serious homework on Rodriguez, and that’s understandable. He’s athletic, productive, and coming off a strong pre-draft process. But taking him at No. 19 overall would feel like a gamble the Panthers don’t need to make.

Rodriguez has become one of the hotter names in this class over the last few months. His stock got a noticeable bump after a strong showing in the all-star circuit and a solid NFL Combine, and league buzz now suggests he could be the second off-ball linebacker selected after Sonny Styles. That’s a major rise, especially for a player who was widely viewed as a Day 2 option not long ago.

That’s where the problem starts for Carolina. The Panthers do need help at linebacker, and Rodriguez fits what they’re trying to build defensively. But No. 19 is a premium pick, and Carolina has other roster holes that may be more urgent than adding another off-ball linebacker next to Devin Lloyd. Reaching there for a player with a second-round grade would be difficult to justify.

There are smarter ways to play it. If the Panthers love Rodriguez, they could explore moving up in Round 2 or even trading back from 19 and targeting him later. That would protect the value of the asset while still giving them a chance to land a player they clearly like.

Carolina’s front office also has reason to be cautious with late-rising prospects. Pre-draft momentum can be real, but it can also lead teams into overthinking the board. Rodriguez may turn into a quality NFL starter. That doesn’t automatically mean he belongs in the middle of the first round.

The Panthers need to come out of this draft with impact talent and sound value. Rodriguez makes sense for Carolina — just not at 19.
