DALLAS – So much for the big debut. The Mavericks opened their season by serving as background actors in Victor Wembanyama’s personal highlight reel, face-planting 125-92 at home while the San Antonio Spurs did layup-line cosplay.
Wembanyama hung an effortless 40 and 15 with three blocks, looking every bit like a glitch in the matrix—fresh off surgery for a blood clot issue, no less.
The marquee intrigue was supposed to be No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.
Instead, the teenager didn’t score until after halftime, finishing with a cosmetic 10 and 10 that read more like a participation trophy than a statement.
Meanwhile, Spurs guard Dylan Harper came off the bench, jump-started the takeover, and dropped 15 as if to remind Dallas that San Antonio’s kids run deeper than one skyscraper.
Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle casually stacked 22 on top.
Anthony Davis had 22 and 13 for Dallas, points that felt like sandbags on a sinking ship, while Kyrie Irving remains months away as he rehabs an ACL tear.
Dereck Lively II spent too much time negotiating foul trouble after Wemby pump-faked the entire building into submission, including whistles that sent both Davis and Lively to the bench during a 13-0 Spurs avalanche late in the first half. Ballgame.
If you’re looking for silver linings, try the arena lighting. It was excellent for Spurs posters.
Dallas gets Washington on Friday to start a five-game homestand. The vibes? Urgent. The margin for error? Already imaginary.
