Mick Schumacher, son of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, is set to make his first foray into INDYCAR racing. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) announced that the 26-year-old driver will participate in an NTT INDYCAR SERIES test on October 13 at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) road course.
The test marks a pivotal moment in Schumacher’s career as he evaluates a future move into INDYCAR after successful stints in Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
“This first INDYCAR test will be an experience to treasure,” Schumacher said. “I’m curious to understand the special features of this car… I’ve heard how physically demanding it is. I’m very excited.”
Schumacher has 44 Formula One starts under his belt with a best finish of sixth and currently races in the WEC for Alpine, where he’s earned four podiums, including two in 2025 at Imola and Spa.
His move to test with RLL isn’t out of nowhere—he’s been serving as a special advisor with the team since November 2024, signaling he was already on their radar as a possible long-term fit.
“The thought of seeing Mick in one of our cars is very exciting,” said Bobby Rahal, RLL co-owner. “We’ve had strong setups at IMS, so it’s a good baseline for him.”
Michael Schumacher dominated the IMS road course during his F1 prime, winning five times between 2000–2006. Now, his son gets a shot at writing his own Indy legacy.
Mick’s not unfamiliar with the track—he was spotted on Carb Day this past May at the Indy 500, soaking in the atmosphere with friend and former RLL driver Dirk Müller.
RLL has had success on the IMS road course recently. During the 2025 Sonsio Grand Prix, drivers Graham Rahal, Louis Foster, and Devlin DeFrancesco all qualified inside the top 5, with Rahal leading 49 of 85 laps.
If Schumacher transitions into the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, he’ll be stepping into a team with real potential—and data to back it up.
Schumacher’s resume goes far beyond his famous last name:
-
FIA Formula 2 Champion (2020)
-
FIA European F3 Champion (2018)
-
Reserve roles with Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, and Williams
-
WEC podiums in 2024 and 2025 with Alpine
With experience across F1, endurance racing, and top-tier junior formulas, Mick Schumacher is more than ready for this INDYCAR test—and maybe more.
The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season begins March 1 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
