European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald announced his picks to round out the 12-member team on Monday morning, and there are absolutely no surprises. Of the 12 players who dominated the U.S. team in Rome two years ago, 11 will run it back at Bethpage Black.
The only difference from two seasons ago is a first name – as Rasmus Hojgaard will replace his twin brother, Nicolai, after securing one of the six automatic qualifying spots. That’s not to say Rasmus is inexperienced. He was present in 2023 as part of the non-playing European Ryder Cup team staff.
While there was some debate over Keegan Bradley’s U.S. team captain’s picks, Donald’s were all slam dunks.
The Euro captain followed the points standings from 7 through 11 with his picks, including Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick for another go. Donald strayed further down the standings for his last pick, to No. 24, a no-brainer in two-time major winner Jon Rahm.
“Jon really sets the standard for us,” Donald said. “He understands the history of the Ryder Cup, what it represents. Obviously, he wants to follow in the footsteps of some amazing Spanish players that led the way.”
“It’s going to be special,” added Rahm. “Cannot wait to be at Bethpage, New Yorkers are going to be incredible fans. It’s going to be difficult for us but looking forward to hopefully having a better showing than the last time we did it in the U.S.”
The home team has won eight of the last nine matches in the biennial event.
Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are only eligible because they’re appealing fines from the DP World Tour for playing in league-conflicting events on the circus-like LIV Golf circuit.
Straka has won twice on the PGA Tour, Åberg and Hovland have both won once, and Lowry and Fitzpatrick combined for nine top-10s.
Donald’s six captain’s picks went a combined 10-8-4 in Rome in 2023, and will join a veteran team that includes Hojgaard, Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.
The Ryder Cup will be held from Sept. 26-28 in Farmingdale, New York.
