The name Arch Manning has become a household one over the past couple of years. The name Malachi Nelson has not. Yet both were top recruits coming out of the class of 2023. As a matter of fact, some had Nelson graded higher than Manning at one point. They were both considered “can’t miss” five-star recruits and signed with big programs.
“We were both at the top of the recruiting boards in ’23. It’s going to be a fun little showdown,” Nelson said. “The environment is going to be rocking … I can’t wait to get out there.”
Manning went to Texas and sat behind Quinn Ewers before winning the starting job this season. Nelson signed at USC and spent his freshman season there. He then transferred to Boise State and sat one season on the bench before ending up in El Paso as the starter this season.
The pressure on Manning has been massive this year, especially after a subpar performance and loss in Week 1 to Ohio State. For Nelson, even after starting his career in Los Angeles, the narrative has been much quieter.
While Manning and the Longhorns will be heavily favored on Saturday, Nelson will have a chance to showcase himself in front of a large audience.
“I’m excited to see what he can do,” Manning said. “I wish him luck the rest of the way.”
Rumors swirled that Manning is dealing with an injury, and Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian denied that this week and addressed the claims of “strained facial expressions” by Manning when throwing the ball.
“I’ve never filmed any of you guys when you’re using the bathroom, so I don’t know what faces you make when you’re doing that,” Sarkisian told reporters in response.
For the Miners to find success on Saturday, they’ll have to try and exploit Texas’ retolled offensive line and put all the possible pressure on Manning. UTEP has posted 10 sacks in their first two games.
The Longhorns and Miners kick off on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
