The Tampa Bay Lightning found their spark early and didn’t let go, fending off a late surge from the Boston Bruins to secure a 4-3 win Monday in Boston.
Pontus Holmberg capped a dominant second period with what proved to be the game-winning goal, firing a wrist shot past Joonas Korpisalo just 3:37 into the frame to give Tampa Bay a commanding 4-1 lead. Max Crozier and Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up assists on the tally as the Lightning controlled play through the opening 40 minutes.
Anthony Cirelli was the star of the night, scoring twice and setting the tone with his energy at both ends of the ice. Yanni Gourde added another goal, helping Tampa Bay build the cushion it would need to withstand Boston’s late push.
The Bruins refused to go quietly, cutting the deficit to one thanks to goals from Jordan Harris, Morgan Geekie, and Casey Mittelstadt. However, Tampa Bay’s defensive structure — and a strong night from goaltender Jonas Johansson — preserved the win. Johansson turned aside 30 of 33 shots, including several key saves down the stretch to shut the door on Boston’s comeback attempt.
Special teams played a major role, with the Lightning penalty kill standing tall. Boston went 0-for-5 on the power play, failing to capitalize on multiple opportunities to swing momentum.
With the victory, Tampa Bay wins its first game of the season and continues to show signs of rounding into form after some uneven performances.
Next up, the Lightning hit the road for a quick turnaround as they visit the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The Bruins will look to rebound when they head west to take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night.
