Kyle Busch, one of NASCAR’s most polarizing and brilliant champions, has died at 41, NASCAR announced Thursday. His death came after his family said he had been hospitalized with a severe illness and would miss race weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Busch wasn’t just another star. He was a storm. Love him or hate him, “Rowdy” made people feel something every time he strapped into a race car. Over more than two decades at NASCAR’s highest level, he built one of the loudest résumés the sport has ever seen: 63 Cup Series wins, championships in 2015 and 2019, and a national-series record that made him impossible to ignore.

His dominance went far beyond Sundays. Busch became the winningest driver in NASCAR’s second-tier series with 102 victories and also piled up 69 Truck Series wins, turning nearly every start outside the Cup Series into must-watch television.

At the Cup level, Busch broke in full time in 2005 and eventually became the kind of driver every garage had to measure itself against. He won with Joe Gibbs Racing, later moved to Richard Childress Racing in 2023, and kept fighting to extend a career defined by raw speed, sharp elbows and total belief.

NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing remembered Busch as a generational talent and future Hall of Famer, while also pointing to the emotional connection he built with “Rowdy Nation.”

He leaves behind his wife, Samantha, and children, Brexton and Lennix, along with a fan base that followed every win, feud, comeback and heartbreak.

NASCAR has lost one of its fiercest competitors. Kyle Busch didn’t just race. He changed the temperature of the sport.

NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing shared a joint statement on Busch’s passing:

“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’ Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt and all of Kyle’s family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.

During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate.”
