Katherine Legge will attempt the Indy 500-Coca-Cola 600 double, aiming to become the first woman to complete both races in one day.

Katherine Legge is taking on one of motorsports’ most demanding challenges, and she’s doing it with a chance to make history.

The 45-year-old driver will attempt the Indianapolis 500-Coca-Cola 600 double on May 24, adding a NASCAR Cup Series start at Charlotte Motor Speedway to her already scheduled Indy 500 run. If Legge completes both races, she’ll become the first woman to finish the legendary same-day motorsports marathon.

Legge is entered in the Indianapolis 500 with A.J. Foyt Motorsports, driving the No. 11 car. Later that day, she’s scheduled to race the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports in the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race.

It’s a massive physical and mental test. The double requires a driver to race 500 miles at Indianapolis, fly to Charlotte, then climb into a stock car for 600 more miles under the lights. Only a handful of drivers have even tried it since the modern version of the challenge began in 1994.

Tony Stewart remains the gold standard. In 2001, he became the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles, finishing sixth in the Indy 500 and third in the Coca-Cola 600.

Legge brings plenty of experience to the attempt. She’s preparing for her fifth Indianapolis 500, with her best finish coming in 2012 when she placed 22nd. She finished 29th in last year’s race. She has also made eight NASCAR Cup Series starts over the past two seasons, including a 35th-place finish last week at Watkins Glen.

Her attempt also connects to the legacy of Janet Guthrie, who helped open doors for women in both IndyCar and NASCAR in the 1970s.

For Legge, though, this isn’t just about endurance. It’s about showing what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity.
