Little Elm, Texas native and Sooners quarterback, John Mateer, threw for 282 yards and a touchdown and scored with his legs on a 51-yard touchdown run as Oklahoma buried Temple 42-3 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sooners running back Troy Blalock added a pair of touchdowns on 100 yards rushing.
“This is a very hungry, driven, humble, tough, high-standard group of young men that like to be pushed, like to be challenged, they like to practice,” Sooners coach Brent Venable said. “When they play together, it does kind of resemble recess. I say that respectfully. They have fun.”
Oklahoma scored on its first four possessions, including Blalock runs of six and 18 yards in the second quarter before taking a 28-3 halftime lead.
Mateer, a Washington State transfer and maybe the most coveted QB in the transfer portal, threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Robinson in the second half before scampering 51 yards for a score that pushed the lead to 42-3. The OU quarterback leads the nation with at least one rushing and one passing touchdown in nine straight games, going back to last season with the Cougars.
“The moment just seemed a little bit too big for us,” Temple coach K.C. Keeler said of the brutal first half.
With the win and some upsets in the Top 25, the Sooners could jump into the top 10 next week.
The “Pride of Oklahoma” marching band did not make the trip to Philadelphia, citing “budget constraints” on social media, but the Saint Joseph’s pep band stood in and even led “Boomer Sooner” for the game.
Up next for the Sooners is No. 24 Auburn on Saturday, and they should be without defensive lineman R. Mason Thomas for the first half. Thomas was ejected for targeting against Temple and will likely have to serve a suspension.
