Jayden Daniels will miss Washington’s game against Seattle, but the Commanders aren’t discussing surgery or injured reserve after his elbow injury.
Jayden Daniels won’t play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, but the latest update from Washington offers the Commanders some badly needed optimism.
General manager Adam Peters said Friday that surgery isn’t currently being considered for Daniels’ dislocated left elbow and the team has not discussed placing its franchise quarterback on injured reserve.

An injured reserve designation would sideline Daniels for at least four games, so keeping that option off the table suggests Washington believes a shorter recovery remains possible.
“He met with doctors all over the country,” Peters said during an appearance on 106.7 The Fan. “We got a lot of good opinions. As of right now, surgery is not on the table and we haven’t discussed IR.”
Daniels injured his left elbow late in the first half of Washington’s 37-20 loss to Dallas last Sunday. He stumbled near the goal line and tried to brace himself with his left arm as he fell, causing the elbow to buckle underneath him.
Initial X-rays revealed no fracture, but the injury was concerning enough that Daniels spent the week gathering additional medical opinions.
Coach Dan Quinn acknowledged Wednesday that the team still didn’t have a firm timetable while those evaluations continued.
Washington now has at least one important answer.
Daniels isn’t ready this week, but the Commanders also aren’t preparing for a lengthy absence just yet.
That puts the offense in Marcus Mariota’s hands against Seattle.
Mariota has experience filling in for Daniels. He started eight games last season and completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,685 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also threw for 111 yards and a touchdown after replacing Daniels against Dallas.
The situation has become urgent because Washington has opened the season 0-2.
Quinn made it clear after Daniels went down that the Commanders would support their veteran backup.

“We will rally so hard around Marcus until Jayden’s back,” Quinn said.
Exactly when that happens remains unclear.
But after several days of uncertainty, Washington finally received encouraging news: Daniels’ injury may not require surgery, and injured reserve isn’t part of the conversation.
For an 0-2 team trying to keep its season from getting away, that qualifies as a significant development.
