Guardians Eye 3-1 ALCS Lead Against Rays After Game 4 Rainout

Cleveland looks to take a commanding 3-1 ALCS lead over Tampa Bay Saturday after Friday’s rainout, with Shawn Armstrong facing Nick Martinez at Progressive Field.

The Cleveland Guardians will have to wait one more night to continue their pursuit of an American League pennant, but Friday’s rainout hasn’t changed what’s at stake.

Cleveland enters Saturday night’s rescheduled Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays holding a 2-1 series advantage and an opportunity to move within one victory of its first World Series appearance since 2016.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. Central at Progressive Field, with television coverage on TBS and streaming available through HBO Max.

Persistent rainfall forced Major League Baseball to postpone Friday’s scheduled contest after officials initially hoped conditions would improve enough to play.

The postponement creates a considerably different scheduling challenge for both clubs.

Game 5 moves to Sunday afternoon at 4:08 p.m. Central, eliminating the originally scheduled travel day. If necessary, the series will return to St. Petersburg for Game 6 on Monday.

For Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt, that means navigating the remainder of the series without another scheduled break.

The Guardians will start right-hander Shawn Armstrong in Game 4, using him as an opener in what figures to be a bullpen-heavy approach.

Armstrong has been outstanding this postseason, allowing just one hit across 5⅓ scoreless innings in four appearances.

Left-hander Joey Cantillo could provide multiple innings, while Tanner Bibee and Slade Cecconi give Cleveland additional pitching options.

Tampa Bay will counter with veteran right-hander Nick Martinez, who posted a 15-6 record and 3.10 ERA during the regular season.

The Rays elected to stick with Martinez despite the additional day of rest created by the postponement.

Cleveland’s confidence comes from Thursday’s dramatic 3-2 victory in Game 3.

Rookie outfielder Petey Halpin delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run, while José Ramírez contributed a key double as the Guardians seized control of the series.

Now the pressure shifts squarely onto Tampa Bay.

The Rays won 98 regular-season games, but their offense has struggled to consistently capitalize on scoring opportunities against Cleveland’s pitching staff.

Sluggers Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz remain dangerous threats capable of changing a game with one swing.

For the Guardians, Saturday presents an opportunity to put Tampa Bay in an extremely difficult position.

A Cleveland victory would establish a 3-1 series lead and give the Guardians a chance to clinch the pennant Sunday in front of their home fans.

A Rays victory would even the series and guarantee another game in Florida.

The rain might have interrupted Cleveland’s momentum, but it hasn’t changed the opportunity.

The Guardians are two victories away from the World Series.

And Saturday night, they can take another enormous step toward getting there.
