Florida Gators Chase Season-Saving Upset at Ole Miss Amid Lane Kiffin Buzz

Florida’s season is hanging by a thread, but there’s still a path to a bowl …  and it runs straight through Oxford.

The Gators (3-6, 2-4 SEC) travel to face No. 6 Mississippi (9-1, 5-1) on Saturday night in a rematch of last year’s 24-17 Ole Miss win that helped knock the Rebels out of the College Football Playoff. While the Rebels are quick to downplay revenge angles, Florida doesn’t have that luxury because Saturday is pure survival mode.

Ole Miss offensive tackle Diego Pounds brushed off talk of 2023, saying, “We’re a whole new team from last year and it’s a whole new season.” Asked if revenge was a factor, he doubled down: “I don’t think so.”

Florida, meanwhile, is trying to steady itself after a brutal slide. A 4-0 finish to 2024 fueled preseason optimism, but a 3-6 start, six losses in eight, and the Oct. 19 firing of Billy Napier have reset everything. Interim coach Billy Gonzales is now trying to drag a shorthanded roster – the Gators had 13 players sidelined last week at Kentucky – back to competitiveness.

Quarterback DJ Lagway is expected to start despite being benched in last week’s 38-7 loss to Kentucky. The sophomore has flashed talent (1,762 yards, 11 TDs) but has been undone by mistakes (12 interceptions). Against an Ole Miss team that’s 7-0 at home and powered by breakout QB Trinidad Chambliss (2,356 passing yards, 434 rushing, 19 total TDs, just three turnovers), Florida can’t afford giveaways.

The backdrop, of course, is Lane Kiffin speculation. With nearly every major opening – including Florida’s – linked to him, Gonzales knows the noise is out there.

“Absolutely, yes sir,” he said when asked if he’s aware of the Kiffin chatter. “Do I read them? I’m aware of it, absolutely. But no, we’ve just got to prepare.”

For Florida, that preparation comes with clear stakes. An upset over Ole Miss would keep postseason hopes alive with home dates against No. 21 Tennessee and Florida State still to come. Running back Jadan Baugh summed up the mindset.

“It would mean a lot to us, but we have to worry about what’s going on here, prepare the right way for this game. I just want it to be a good game, get our players back healthy and be ready to play.”

Kiffin, for his part, isn’t treating Florida like a 3-6 afterthought.

“This is the same team that was ahead of Georgia in the fourth quarter. This is the same team that outplayed Texas and beat Texas,” he said. “They’re as talented as anybody with elite talent on both sides of the ball.”

If the Gators can finally finish like that version of themselves, they might just shock the SEC and keep their season alive in the toughest environment they’ve seen all year.
