The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 offseason with optimism inside The Star — but skepticism everywhere else.
After finishing 7-9-1 in 2025, Dallas is once again trying to reset expectations. Despite flashes from a high-powered offense, defensive breakdowns proved costly throughout the season. That uneven performance has oddsmakers projecting the Cowboys squarely in the middle of the NFL pack next year.

DraftKings has released its early win totals for 2026, setting Dallas at 8.5 victories. That number suggests modest improvement, but not a leap into true contender status.
First-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer showed growth during his debut season, particularly on offense. Now, attention turns to a retooled defensive staff led by new coordinator Christian Parker. Parker made a strong impression during his introductory press conference, but scheme alone won’t fix what ailed Dallas. The roster needs reinforcements.
The good news? The Cowboys hold two first-round selections in the upcoming NFL Draft. That draft capital gives Dallas flexibility to add impact talent, particularly along the defensive front, where pressure and consistency were lacking. However, rookies alone won’t be enough.
Owner Jerry Jones has hinted at being more aggressive financially this offseason, even suggesting he’s prepared to “bust the budget.” That would mark a significant shift from recent years, where Dallas has often opted for restraint in free agency.

National perception remains cautious — and understandably so. Over the past three decades, expectations have frequently outpaced results. If the Cowboys want to move beyond the 8.5-win projection and back into playoff contention, they must attack free agency, maximize their draft assets, and rebuild a defense capable of closing games.
The opportunity is there. Whether Dallas capitalizes on it will define 2026.
