The Dallas Cowboys have another problem to solve before Indianapolis: Malachi Lawrence could be missing from their pass rush for weeks. The rookie outside linebacker’s ankle injury adds uncertainty to a defense already trying to regroup after Sunday’s overtime loss to Arizona.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer hasn’t given a firm return date. Lawrence still needs further evaluation, so the timetable remains an estimate rather than a confirmed absence.

“Looks like it could be a few weeks,” Schottenheimer said.

Lawrence’s Growing Role Hits A Pause

Lawrence had started three games and was getting a larger opportunity in the edge rotation. His season includes one sack and three quarterback hits, numbers that show how early he still is in establishing himself.

That makes the timing frustrating. Dallas needs young defenders to turn playing time into dependable production, and an interruption now would slow that process for Lawrence while forcing someone else to handle his work.

The Cowboys’ 33-30 overtime defeat against Arizona also offered a reminder that isolated defensive wins don’t guarantee a finished performance. Dallas built a 17-3 lead and still couldn’t close the game.

A replacement plan will have to address more than simply filling Lawrence’s spot on the field. The Cowboys need pressure that holds up alongside sound coverage, especially when an opponent changes the rhythm of a game.

Secondary Concerns, Better News For Ferguson

Lawrence isn’t the only defensive concern. Caleb Downs and P.J. Locke are both in concussion protocol, leaving their availability unresolved as preparation begins for the Colts.

Those are separate situations from Lawrence’s ankle injury, and none should be treated as a final game designation this early in the week. Practice participation and subsequent medical updates will provide a clearer picture. Dallas can prepare contingency plans now without assuming that every player on this list will be unavailable.

On offense, Jake Ferguson’s initial ankle examinations offered encouragement. Schottenheimer said there’s hope the tight end can practice this week and potentially play against Indianapolis, though Dallas will continue monitoring him.

For now, the Cowboys are balancing recovery with preparation. Getting Ferguson back would help, but the larger defensive challenge remains: build a plan that can survive injuries and stay reliable through the final possession.
