Cowboys Face Crucial Decision as George Pickens Free Agency Looms

The Dallas Cowboys are approaching one of the most important crossroads of their offseason, and it centers on star wide receiver George Pickens. With no long-term deal finalized and the franchise tag still on the table, Pickens is on track to become one of the most coveted names in NFL free agency if Dallas cannot lock him up in the coming weeks.

If Pickens reaches the open market, interest will be immediate and aggressive. Elite wide receivers entering their prime rarely do, and Pickens checks every box: production, age, and star power. But inside the Cowboys’ locker room, there’s a strong belief that Dallas should – and will – find a way to keep him.

That belief starts with fellow Pro Bowl receiver CeeDee Lamb. Appearing on Kay Adams’ show following the Pro Bowl Games, Lamb made it clear that he wants Pickens back in Dallas and isn’t buying into the idea of him joining an NFC rival. Lamb even revealed that former Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons has been playfully recruiting Pickens elsewhere – specifically to the Green Bay Packers.

Lamb wasn’t worried.

“They’re not getting him,” he said confidently.

Behind the humor is a serious football reality. The Cowboys’ offense reached another level when Lamb and Pickens were on the field together. Defenses couldn’t double both players consistently, and the vertical threat Pickens provides opened space across the middle for Lamb and tight end routes. Dallas saw flashes of what that pairing could be – but never the full-season version they envisioned.

Lamb doubled down on that point during Super Bowl Week, speaking with former quarterback and NBC analyst Chris Simms on Radio Row. His message was blunt and revealing.

“I need GP back,” Lamb said. “We need to have the full season that we were supposed to have.”

That sentiment is shared throughout the organization. Quarterback Dak Prescott has been vocal about wanting Pickens to return, and the Cowboys’ leadership has echoed similar feelings publicly. Pickens himself has also indicated that Dallas is where he wants to be, which gives the front office a clear opportunity – and responsibility – to get a deal done.

The numbers make the case easy. In 2025, Pickens delivered the best season of his career, finishing with 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. All three were career highs, and the performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. He emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous downfield threats while also becoming more reliable in the short and intermediate passing game.

From a roster-building standpoint, losing Pickens would be a massive setback. Dallas has spent years trying to find a true complement to Lamb, and when they finally did, the results were immediate. Letting Pickens walk would not only weaken the offense but also strengthen potential rivals if he signs elsewhere.

There’s also a cautionary tale fresh in Cowboys fans’ minds. Last offseason’s drawn-out contract situation with Parsons created unnecessary tension and distractions. Many around the team hope owner and general manager Jerry Jones avoids a repeat scenario by acting decisively with Pickens.

The coming weeks will define Dallas’ offensive future. A long-term extension would solidify one of the NFL’s most dangerous receiving duos and keep the Cowboys firmly in the Super Bowl conversation. Failure to act could open the door for another team – possibly even an NFC contender – to swoop in.

For now, the message from the locker room is crystal clear: George Pickens belongs in Dallas, and the Cowboys need to make sure he stays there.
