Cowboys, CeeDee Lamb Drop Opener to Eagles on Banner Night in Philly

The Dallas Cowboys rode into Philadelphia on Thursday Night Football and left with a 24-20 loss to the World Champion Eagles after a series of comical errors at Lincoln Financial Field.

It was a night of celebration for the Eagles, as they raised their Super Bowl championship banner from last year, but defensive tackle Jalen Carter wasn’t in the mood to party.

After the opening kickoff, while an Eagles player lay injured on the field and was being tended to by the Philly training staff, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Carter exchanged words in between the two teams’ huddles.

It ended with Carter spitting on Prescott in full view of the officials, and Carter being ejected.

When all was said and done, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts and his team weathered a 65-minute rain delay and showed why they’re the champs. Hurts rushed for two touchdowns, but Philly needed a late rally to hold off the Cowboys.

Part of that late rally included uncharacteristic drops by the Cowboys $34M/yr wideout, CeeDee Lamb. The last of those drops, on 4th-and-3 with 1:54 left in the game, sent the Philly crowd home happy.

Hurts took advantage of a Cowboys defense playing without Micah Parsons, who was traded to the Green Bay Packers ahead of the start of the season. The Eagles QB rushed for TD runs of four and eight yards while running back Saquon Barkley had a 10-yard carry for a touchdown.

The good news for Dallas is that it held Barkley, who eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark last season, to just 60 rushing yards on Thursday night. The bad news is it wasn’t enough to overcome Lamb’s drops.

Cowboys first-year head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, lost in his debut, but he said it doesn’t change his goal of a Super Bowl.

“I still think we can win a Super Bowl,” he said. “It’s not going to change. I mean, we’ve got the right type of guys. We’ve got good players.”

Next up, Dallas will host the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sept. 14.
