Dallas Cowboys cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. isn’t easing into Year 2 with a modest goal. He’s thinking much bigger than that.
After a rookie season that started with injury frustration and ended with him cracking the starting lineup, Revel has made it clear he believes his ceiling is as high as any defensive back in the NFL. The Cowboys’ young corner told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he expects to become the best cornerback in football someday, and he isn’t backing away from the confidence that comes with that kind of statement.

For Dallas, that’s exactly the kind of edge a young secondary needs.
Revel’s rookie season wasn’t easy. He missed the first 10 games while working his way back from a knee injury suffered during his college career. That delay could have buried a first-year player on the depth chart, especially on a defense with plenty of moving pieces. Instead, Revel kept grinding, got himself on the field late in the season and eventually earned starting reps.
The impressive part is that Revel now admits he still wasn’t fully himself.
He said he played through the lingering effects of the knee injury because he felt he could still help the team. That matters. A rookie cornerback trying to survive in the NFL is already dealing with speed, route detail, veteran quarterbacks and weekly pressure. Revel was doing it while still trying to regain his explosiveness and comfort after a major injury.
That context makes his late-season push more interesting.
If Revel was able to work into the Cowboys’ starting lineup without being fully healthy, Dallas has reason to be intrigued by what he might look like with a full offseason, a healthier body and more confidence in his knee. Young cornerbacks often take time to develop, but traits and belief matter at that position. Revel clearly has both.
The Cowboys need growth in the secondary, and Revel gives them a fascinating piece to watch. He has length, confidence and the mentality to compete outside, which is exactly what Dallas will need against the high-powered passing attacks on its schedule.
Of course, becoming the best cornerback in the NFL is a massive goal. That doesn’t happen because a player says it out loud. It takes consistency, technique, durability and production against elite receivers.

Revel seems to understand that part, too. His confidence isn’t coming without work attached to it.
That’s why this quote should excite Cowboys fans more than concern them. Shavon Revel Jr. isn’t just talking like a player who wants attention. He’s talking like a player who believes last season was only the beginning.
