The Week 12 College Football Coaches Poll dropped like a bombshell across college football, and the ACC is catching shrapnel.
Virginia and Louisville were the latest victims of a late-season collapse that’s turned the once-proud conference into a punchline. Their tumble cleared the way for Georgia Tech – yes, Georgia Tech – to become the ACC’s top-ranked survivor at No. 12, as the league’s playoff credibility continues to melt faster than a snow cone in Tallahassee.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M just keeps rolling. The third-ranked Aggies are 9-0 for the first time since 1992 after knocking off No. 17 Missouri, stacking their fourth road win of the year.
“I don’t know about the past,” said head coach Mike Elko. “I know that’s four road games that this team has gone on the road and won. We’re 4-0 this year on the road and we’ve only got one left, so we’ll finish this year with a winning record if my math is right.”
Translation? The Aggies are done apologizing for anything. They’ve beaten everyone in front of them and still have South Carolina, Samford, and No. 10 Texas waiting as they gun for a perfect regular season and a playoff lock.
BYU’s magical run hit a wall against Texas Tech in a Big 12 top-10 showdown, their first loss of the season.
The Cougars fell to No. 12 while the Red Raiders vaulted to No. 8, setting up a potential rematch in the conference title game that could define the playoff race for both teams.
Elsewhere, the Group of Five playoff chase turned into a full-on demolition derby. Memphis got bounced from the rankings after losing to Tulane, leaving North Texas (8-1) and USF (7-2) as the frontrunners to scrap for the American crown and that coveted New Year’s Six golden ticket.
North Texas is ranked in the Coaches Poll for the first time this season, sitting just outside the top 25 with 98 votes, one shy of USF’s 99.
The top five? No surprise … Ohio State (59 first-place votes) holds steady at No. 1, followed by Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Georgia. Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, and Texas round out the top ten, with Oklahoma tied at No. 10.
If you’re looking for stability, this isn’t your poll. The ACC’s in freefall, the Big 12’s eating itself alive, and the SEC’s back on schedule with Alabama and A&M charging toward Atlanta. In November, the only thing predictable about college football is that somebody’s about to get embarrassed.
