Texas A&M broke open a tight game with two defensive touchdowns and 24 fourth-quarter points in a 48-20 win over Arizona State.

Texas A&M’s defense zurned a tense afternoon into a rout.

The No. 10 Aggies pulled away from Arizona State for a 48-20 victory Saturday at Kyle Field, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter and getting two defensive touchdowns to improve to 2-0.

Texas A&M led just 24-20 entering the final period before Marcel Reed hit Mario Craver for a 33-yard touchdown on the second play of the quarter. From there, the defense took over.

With Arizona State threatening after recovering a fumble at the A&M 34, T.J. Searcy pressured quarterback Cutter Boley into a hurried throw. Defensive end Marco Jones intercepted it and returned the ball 55 yards for a touchdown, giving the Aggies breathing room.

Later in the quarter, Julio Humphrey picked off Boley and took it 45 yards to the end zone, turning the game into a blowout.

Reed finished 15 of 25 for 163 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He wasn’t consistently sharp, but he made enough big throws when Texas A&M needed them.

Isaiah Horton continued his strong start with two touchdown receptions, including a 13-yard score in the third quarter after Arizona State had cut the margin to four.

The Sun Devils made A&M work for it.

Boley completed 21 of 34 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but his two fourth-quarter interceptions proved costly. Reed Harris was Arizona State’s biggest weapon, catching nine passes for a career-high 189 yards and two touchdowns. His 58-yard score late in the third quarter pulled the Sun Devils within 24-20.

Arizona State actually finished with 369 total yards to Texas A&M’s 255, but the Aggies won the turnover battle decisively and turned those mistakes directly into points.

That’s the biggest takeaway from Saturday.

Texas A&M’s offense still has work to do. Reed needs to be more accurate, and the Aggies can’t keep allowing explosive plays in the secondary.

But when the game was there to be won, Mike Elko’s defense delivered.

Two fourth-quarter pick-sixes changed everything.

Texas A&M now heads into SEC play at 2-0, with Kentucky coming to Kyle Field next Saturday.
