The Lone Star Showdown delivered another heavyweight chapter on Friday night, and this time it was Texas that landed the final punch. The No. 16 Longhorns handed No. 3 Texas A&M its first loss of the season in a 27-17 upset at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, spoiling the Aggies’ perfect run and knocking them out of the SEC Championship Game.

Early on, it looked like Texas A&M might be ready to finally grab its first win in Austin since 2010. Both defenses controlled the opening quarter, with Longhorns defensive end and Austin native Ethan Burke making the first huge play of the night by blocking an Aggie field goal attempt to keep things scoreless. The teams traded field goals in the second quarter before A&M struck late, as KC Concepcion powered in for an 8-yard rushing score with under a minute left to give the Aggies a 10-3 halftime lead – his first rushing touchdown of the season.

Whatever adjustment Texas made in the locker room worked. The Longhorns seized control in the third quarter, shutting out the Aggies while turning a seven-point deficit into a lead they would never give back. A Mason Shipley field goal cut the margin to four, and then Arch Manning finally broke through the Aggie secondary, hitting Ryan Wingo for a 29-yard touchdown to put Texas ahead 13-10.

The real backbreaker came moments later. Manning found tight end Jack Endries streaking downfield for a 54-yard gain to the Aggies’ 2-yard line, and freshman tight end Nick Townsend finished the drive on a reverse to push the Texas lead to 20-10 heading into the fourth.

The Aggies did not fold. EJ Smith cut the deficit to three with a 13-yard touchdown run just under the 10-minute mark, briefly swinging momentum back toward the visitors. But on the very next defining play, Manning used his legs, slicing through the middle of the Aggie defense for a 35-yard touchdown run that restored the double-digit lead at 27-17.

From there, the Texas defense closed the door. Marcel Reed led an impressive march into the red zone, only to be picked off at the 3-yard line by safety and Austin native Michael Taaffe. After Texas burned the clock and all three A&M timeouts, sophomore defensive back Kobe Black intercepted Reed on the next Aggie possession, allowing the Longhorns to kneel out the rivalry win.

Manning finished 14-of-29 for 179 yards and a touchdown through the air, plus 53 rushing yards and a score. Endries posted 93 receiving yards on four catches, while Quintrevion Wisner gashed a stout Aggie front for 155 rushing yards in a breakout performance. For Texas A&M, Reed went 20-of-32 for 180 yards with two interceptions and led the team with 71 rushing yards. Concepcion paced the Aggies with 57 receiving yards on five catches.

Texas closes the regular season at 9-3 and keeps its faint College Football Playoff hopes technically alive with a third win over a top-10 opponent. Texas A&M falls to 11-1, loses its shot at the SEC title in Atlanta, and watches Georgia clinch a spot in the championship game—but the Aggies still remain in a strong position to earn the first CFP berth in program history, even after a bitter night in Austin.
