The No. 9 Texas Tech Red Raiders made a national statement on Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, dismantling previously unbeaten No. 8 BYU 29-7 in a game that lived up to its top-10 billing … for one side, at least.
The Red Raiders dominated every phase of the contest, powered by Stone Harrington’s school-record five field goals and a suffocating defense that held the Cougars to a season-low 255 total yards.

Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton threw for 216 yards and a nine-yard touchdown to Caleb Douglas, while Cameron Dickey added 121 rushing yards and a short score on the ground. Harrington was automatic, drilling kicks from 47, 39, 34, 29, and 27 yards to keep the scoreboard moving as the Red Raiders (9-1, 6-1 Big 12, No. 8 CFP) controlled the tempo from start to finish.
Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez delivered two critical takeaways. He had an interception in the third quarter that led to Harrington’s fourth field goal, and a recovery of a backward pass late in the game that set up the final kick. His defensive heroics helped Texas Tech seal its first win in a top-10 matchup since 2008 and keep its Big 12 title hopes alive.
BYU (8-1, 5-1 Big 12), meanwhile, looked nothing like the offensive juggernaut that entered the weekend averaging 36.3 points per game. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier completed 23 of 38 passes for 188 yards and one late touchdown to Chase Roberts, but also committed two turnovers.
Star running back LJ Martin, who came in leading the Big 12 in rushing, was limited to just 35 yards on 10 carries against Texas Tech’s top-ranked run defense.

The Cougars’ 10-game winning streak, dating back to last season, was snapped, and their playoff hopes took a serious hit. Texas Tech’s defense swarmed all night, while Harrington’s precision gave the Red Raiders points on nearly every meaningful drive.
With the win, Texas Tech is firmly in position to reach the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time since joining the league in 1996. The Red Raiders host UCF next week, aiming for their first unbeaten home season since 1995, while BYU returns to Provo to face TCU and try to regroup after its first loss of the year.
