North Texas vs. UAB Preview: Mean Green Chase Ninth Win

by | Nov 15, 2025 | Blog, Dallas

North Texas (8-1) heads to Birmingham to face UAB (3-6) on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+, looking to keep momentum behind one of the nation’s most explosive offenses and an opportunistic defense.

The Mean Green rank 6th nationally in total offense (485.6 ypg), 6th in passing (307.2 ypg), and 2nd in scoring (44.4 ppg). Quarterback Drew Mestemaker is dealing at a 68.6% clip for 2,692 yards with a 21–4 TD–INT line, while Caleb Hawkins powers the ground game with 734 yards and 11 TDs. Wyatt Young (638 yards, 7 TDs) headlines a deep receiving corps.

The matchup edges tilt heavily toward North Texas in the margins. UAB is 122nd in turnover margin (-8), while North Texas is 4th (+11). In the red area, the Mean Green finish drives at an elite 92.5% (14th), and the Blazers’ defense allows scores on 89.2% of trips (111th). Discipline also favors UNT: UAB is 120th in penalty yards per game (66.8), compared to 35th for North Texas (46.3).

UAB can sling it and will test a Mean Green defense that’s stingy through the air but leaky against the run. The Blazers sit 24th in passing (275.8 ypg) behind Jalen Kitna (1,785 yards, 10 TD, 5 INT, 68.5%), with Iverson Hooks (51/677/6) as the go-to target. Jevon Jackson (592 rushing yards) gives balance, though UAB’s rushing output is 106th. North Texas counters with a top-10 pass defense (160.3 ypg, 8th) but must hold up better versus the run (204.1 ypg allowed, 130th). Expect UAB to chase balance early before leaning on Kitna if the game script tilts.

Key situational battles loom. UAB’s offense converts 43.7% on third down (43rd), while North Texas allows 46.5% (117th). If the Blazers can extend drives and shorten the game, they can keep Mestemaker and Hawkins on the sideline. Conversely, any UAB giveaways could avalanche into short fields and quick-strike points.

North Texas handled Navy 31-17 last time out behind 197 rushing yards and four TDs from Hawkins, while UAB fell 24-17 to Rice despite a clean two-TD day from Ryder Burton and 89 rushing yards by Jackson.

If the Mean Green protect the ball and maintain their red-zone ruthlessness, they’re positioned to secure win No. 9 and keep their conference goals intact in Birmingham.
