The University of Miami men’s basketball team remained red hot in the ACC, outlasting Georgia Tech 91-81 on Saturday inside the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida. The victory was the Hurricanes’ eighth in a row overall and extended their undefeated league record to 3-0. The 14-2 team improved to 2-0 at home with the win.
Miami was led by Tre Donaldson, a transfer from Michigan, who scored a career-high 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting, along with 10 assists and three rebounds in 39 minutes. Donaldson was clutch in the final stretch, scoring seven points in a row to quash any late comeback by the Yellow Jackets. He hit two free throws and then sank a mid-range jumper and the game-winning 3-pointer with 39 seconds on the clock.
The Hurricanes had an impressive start to the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and building a double-digit spread of 22-8.
Freshman Shelton Henderson got the Hurricanes’ offense rolling in the first half, scoring 14 of his 17 points before the break, and Miami coasted to a 47-33 halftime lead. Malik Reneau chipped in 18 points, and Ernest Udeh Jr. had 13 points and 15 rebounds to power the second unit, his second consecutive double-double.
Georgia Tech (10-7, 1-3 ACC) was down, but they didn’t roll over and die.
Kowacie Reeves Jr. had 23 points, and Lamar Washington added 21 to lead the Yellow Jackets in a bid to avoid the shutout. The visitors hit their stride late, cutting the deficit to 77-72 with less than five minutes on the clock. Timotej Malovec made a three-pointer for the Hurricanes, and Donaldson put the game on ice with his final seven points.
Miami will look to extend its ACC winning streak on Tuesday at Notre Dame. Georgia Tech returns home to face Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
