The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition just got a little more combustible.

Deshaun Watson is back at the Browns facility, and his return adds another layer of pressure to one of the NFL’s most fascinating training camp battles. Watson, who missed the entire 2025 season with a torn Achilles, is trying to reclaim the starting job while second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders pushes hard to take control of the offense.

Watson enters the final season of his five-year fully guaranteed contract, and Cleveland still doesn’t have a clear answer at quarterback. Since arriving in the blockbuster trade that reshaped the franchise, Watson has started just 19 games. His numbers with the Browns have been uneven: a 61.2 completion percentage, 3,365 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The wins haven’t exactly followed, either. Cleveland went 1-6 in Watson’s starts during the 2024 season, which is why this competition feels wide open instead of ceremonial.

Now Watson is working with his private physical therapist and private quarterback coach at the team facility, a clear sign that he’s trying to close the gap before pads come on. He’s also reportedly planning a mid-July passing camp in South Florida with offensive teammates, and Sanders is expected to attend rather than organize a separate workout.

That part matters. Even with both quarterbacks chasing the same job, Sanders is keeping the team-first optics clean. He could’ve made his own camp, his own headlines and his own statement. Instead, he’s choosing to work alongside Watson.

New head coach Todd Monken wanted a starter picked by the end of the offseason program, but that deadline came and went without a decision. Monken has said both quarterbacks have shown enough to keep the race alive, which sounds nice in June but gets real fast when the preseason begins.

For Watson, this is about proving his body is right and his game still has enough juice. For Sanders, it’s about showing he’s not just the exciting young option, but the better one.
