The Cleveland Browns took former Ole Miss and Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft.

He was supposed to be a potential replacement for long-time fan favorite Nick Chubb, who is now with the Houston Texans after signing a free agent deal this offseason. But after the draft, things went south for the 21-year-old Judkins. He was arrested in July on misdemeanor domestic battery charges in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Those charges were dropped in August.

Judkins missed training camp and the preseason and didn’t sign his rookie contract with the Browns until recently, while the team allowed him time to work through his legal troubles. Now that the contract has been signed, the NFL will now meet with Judkins next week in connection with the pending Personal Conduct Policy investigation.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio broke down the process.

“Part of the review includes talking to the player about the situation,” Florio wrote. “Eventually (and barring a deal between Judkins and the league), the matter will be presented to Judge Sue L. Robinson for an initial decision on punishment, if any. Her factual findings will be binding; any sanction she issues can be appealed by either side to the Commissioner or his designee.”

Speculation is that Judkins will be available to play and practice until the NFL makes a ruling on a suspension, if any is warranted. He will most likely not play on Sunday against the Bengals since he hasn’t had even one practice with the team yet.

For Cleveland, it’s the second offseason in a row where a rookie has found legal issues. Last season, Ohio State defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was arrested on the same charges as Judkins, and eventually served a five-game suspension.
