Can Dave Canales and Dan Morgan Build a Sustainable Winner for the Panthers?

by | Feb 6, 2026 | Blog, Carolinas

The Carolina Panthers didn’t arrive at relevance overnight, but the early returns from the Dave Canales–Dan Morgan era suggest the franchise is finally moving with purpose. Entering their second season together, the head coach and general manager pairing has already delivered tangible progress—and real optimism in Charlotte.

While 2025 was Dan Morgan’s first year running the front office, his imprint was felt immediately. The former Panthers linebacker wasted no time reshaping the roster around his young quarterback, selecting wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with the ninth overall pick. That decision paid off in a big way. McMillan finished his rookie season with just over 1,000 receiving yards, becoming the only rookie wideout to cross that threshold. At 6-foot-5, his polish as a route runner separated him from typical big-bodied receivers and gave Carolina a true matchup weapon on the outside.

Morgan’s background as a former player has also helped establish trust inside the building. He’s been transparent about the Panthers’ next steps, openly acknowledging that linebacker help and pass rush upgrades are priorities heading into the 2026 offseason. That clarity matters, especially for a team still laying its foundation.

On the sideline, Dave Canales continues to show why he was hired. His willingness to make tough calls—including temporarily benching quarterback Bryce Young early in the season—raised eyebrows at the time. In hindsight, it proved pivotal. After returning to the lineup, Young delivered the best stretch of his young career, throwing for 5,792 yards with 45 touchdowns and 18 interceptions while setting a new Panthers single-game passing record.

More importantly, the relationship between Canales and Young has visibly matured. Young recently praised Canales on The Pat McAfee Show, emphasizing the trust and consistency within the offense and how Canales’ philosophy has helped him grow as a leader.

Sustained success in the NFL is rarely linear, but Carolina finally looks aligned from the front office to the field. Morgan has shown discipline and vision, while Canales has proven he can develop a quarterback and command a locker room. If Bryce Young continues trending upward and roster upgrades follow this same steady logic, the Panthers may have found the leadership duo capable of guiding them into a far more stable—and competitive—future.
