What started like another frustrating afternoon at Raymond James turned into a gritty, survival-mode win, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held off the Arizona Cardinals 20-17 to snap their skid and hang onto a slim lead in the NFC South.
It wasn’t pretty. It didn’t need to be.
The Bucs opened the game looking sloppy, with back-to-back false starts and an Emeka Egbuka drop short-circuiting their first drive. Arizona responded with a long, clock-chewing march, but Jacoby Brissett’s early mistake flipped the script. Jamel Dean got a hand on a pass, and Antoine Winfield Jr. did the rest, snatching the tipped ball to kill the drive and give Tampa Bay life.
The offense didn’t cash in off that turnover, punting again, but the defense found its footing. The Cardinals went three-and-out to start the second quarter, and Baker Mayfield finally got the offense moving, stringing together a 5:13 drive that ended in only a field goal after Chris Godwin dropped a would-be touchdown in the red zone.
Up 3-0, the Bucs leaned on another methodical possession and dialed up one of the wildest plays of the season. In the red zone, Mayfield found left tackle Tristan Wirfs for his first NFL reception — and his first touchdown — to make it 10-0. Arizona answered with a late field goal to cut it to 10-3 at the half.
The second half was all about missed chances and answered punches. Arizona fumbled on its opening drive of the third quarter, but Tampa Bay immediately went three-and-out. The Cardinals then missed a field goal, and the Bucs finally made them pay. Bucky Irving ripped off a 13-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 17-3, looking every bit like the spark this backfield has been missing.
Arizona refused to fold, answering with a Zonovan Knight touchdown reception to make it 17-10. Tampa Bay stretched it back to a two-score game on a 57-yard bomb of a field goal, going up 20-10 after the defense stuffed a 4th-and-1 gamble.
Even then, the Bucs couldn’t slam the door. Brissett marched the Cardinals down again and hit Trey McBride for a 15-yard score to cut it to 20-17, setting up a tense finish. The Bucs offense stalled and punted with exactly two minutes left, giving Arizona one last shot.
The defense delivered. A late Cardinals drive stalled on a crucial third down, and Tampa Bay’s offense closed it out in victory formation.
It wasn’t dominant, and it won’t quiet every concern. But in a tight division race, style points don’t matter. The Bucs needed a win. They got one.
