Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns (2-1) made it past the UTEP Miners (1-2) in Week 3 27-10 at DKR Memorial Stadium in Austin on Saturday, but it wasn’t pretty. Manning was once again met with the “boo birds” on his home turf.
Manning ran for two first-half touchdowns but struggled in the passing game once again.
As one of the preseason Heisman Trophy favorites, it was surprising for many to see Manning struggle to get the offense past UTEP’s defense in what was considered a close game for the Longhorns. Texas led just 14-3 at halftime. Manning started the game 4-of-5 passing for 58 yards, but then proceeded to throw 10 straight incompletions while mixing in an interception as he was booed by the home crowd in the first half.
“I’ve got to play better,” Manning said. “I’m just frustrated. I know I’m better than this. It’s going to be hard to sleep tonight.”
All the preseason hype surrounded the quarterback with the famous family, but he has so far failed to live up to the hype after taking over the starting role under center from Quinn Ewers, who entered the NFL Draft.
Manning was 9-of-22 for 97 yards through the first three quarters with erratic throwing motions at times.
“I felt like he pressed some. He knew he missed some throws,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “I feel like we’ve done enough with him to have a pretty good understanding of who he is as a player and what he’s capable of. I know there’s a lot of football in him that’s high-level football.”
Manning noted after the game that the poor play certainly bothers him.
“All my life I’ve been an accurate passer,” Manning said. “I’ve just got to get back to it.”
The Longhorns’ defense had a better night, virtually smothering the UTEP offense and holding the Miners to 259 total yards. The Texas defense has allowed just four touchdowns all season.
Up next, the Longhorns host Sam Houston State on Saturday.
