Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans caught five passes for 51 yards in Sunday’s 23-20 road win over the South rival Atlanta Falcons – the team’s first win over Atlanta in three tries after getting swept last season. But Evans’ stat line wasn’t the story.
Rather, all eyes were on rookie first-round pick Emeka Egbuka, who ended the game with four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns, and new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard. The rookie out of Ohio State also carried the ball once for nine yards, showing that Grizzard and the Bucs are willing to use him just about everywhere they can.
Evans has commented all offseason about how impressed he was with Egbuka coming in as a rookie, and after the win over Atlanta, that sentiment remains unchanged.
“He is super prepared. He is one of the most prepared players that I have been around. I know he is a rookie, but he is super prepared, polished, super explosive, and a great playmaker,” Evans said. “He is going to continue to make plays for us. It is a good way to start off your career with two touchdowns — it is hard to get touchdowns in this league for sure.”
The 12-year veteran has seen his fair share of offensive coordinators during his time in Tampa Bay. Grizzard marks the seventh OC the former Texas A&M Aggies standout has seen since being drafted in 2014. He’s also the fourth in the last four seasons. But Evans is pleased with the new arrival.
“He did a great job his first time calling it. We could have executed better on some [plays], but we did fairly decent for our first time together in that offense. He is going to continue to get better,” Evans said of Grizzard.
Now, the return of injured wideout Chris Godwin will make the offense more complete, and Evans can’t wait to see him get back on the field. Godwin went down in Week 7 with a brutal ankle injury that ended his season, and has kept him out of the lineup to start the season. But he returned to practice this week and is close to coming back.
“It was amazing. Everybody was super ecstatic out there. Every time he ran a route, everyone was just watching. He looked good, looked really good,” Evans said of Godwin in his return to practice.
