Aaron Rodgers Shines in Steelers Debut with 34-32 Comeback Win Over Jets

New Steelers 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked like the 27-year-old version of himself with four touchdown passes in the Steelers’ 34-32 comeback win on the road over the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

His day featured big throws, accurate throws, and more importantly, no turnovers during his return to New York, where he played for the Jets for the past two seasons.

“I love beating everybody,” Rodgers said. “It doesn’t matter who it is.”

As much as he underplayed it, it had to be satisfying to beat the team and coach that released him this past offseason.

“I was happy to beat everybody associated with the Jets,” Rodgers said when asked if he was pleased to beat new Jets coach Aaron Glenn. “I gave as much as I could to the team. I didn’t have any hard feelings about it not working out. I didn’t maybe appreciate the way it went down in the end, but that’s in the past. And we’re 1-and-0.”

Pittsburgh was trailing 32-31 when Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense got the ball with just over three minutes left in the game. On a 4th-and-11 from the 42, coach Mike Tomlin chose to let kicker Chris Boswell attempt a 60-yard field goal for the potential go-ahead points. He made it with a lot of room to spare.

“I can’t say enough about Boz,” Tomlin said. “Our kicker is a serial killer. He’s got a low pulse rate. He can’t wait to deliver.”

Boswell’s previous career-long field goal was from 59 yards in 2022, also against the Jets.

Former Steelers QB Justin Fields, now leading the Jets’ offense, got the ball back with 56 ticks left in the game, and connected with receiver Garrett Wilson on a 4th-and-3 for what would’ve been a first down to extend the potential game-winning drive. But Jalen Ramsey hit Wilson hard just as he caught the ball, jarring it loose for the incompletion and a turnover on downs.

Fields finished the game 16-of-22 for 218 yards with a touchdown pass. He added 48 yards on 12 carries.

Rodgers and the Steelers offense kneeled just once to end the game.

“Boz bailed us out with an amazing kick,” Rodgers said. “It was a good team win. A lot of new guys made some plays. Proud of our guys.”

It was the first time in NFL history that quarterbacks started a Week 1 game against teams they started for in the prior season’s Week 1.

“I think we played well,” Fields said. “I think we ran the ball well. Our offensive line did a great job. We only had one sack and that was in the red zone. As a team, we were docile and kind of keeping each other in the fight.”

“Man, we can’t have turnovers,” Glenn said. “We can’t do it. We have to be a more disciplined team. … That’s something that will be addressed. You will not be on the field with this team if you’re going to cause us to lose games.”

Up next, the Steelers play in their home opener on Sunday against the visiting Seattle Seahawks, who fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 17-13, on Sunday.
