The Cleveland Browns are staring down one of the most financially complex quarterback situations in the NFL, stemming from the fully guaranteed $230 million contract given to Deshaun Watson.
As the organization openly regrets the “big swing-and-miss,” the reality of Watson’s $132 million dead cap value in 2026 means he’ll remain on the roster for the foreseeable future, whether he plays or not.
However, recent events have revealed what may be Watson’s most productive role yet: mentoring the Browns’ young quarterbacks.

During Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Watson was captured on broadcast acting as a coach, going over plays with rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders (and also Dillon Gabriel). This was Watson’s first road trip of the season, and he was clearly engaged—a positive sign that coincided with Sanders picking up the win in his NFL debut.
With the trade of Joe Flacco to the Bengals earlier this season, the veteran presence in the quarterback room had been minimal.
Watson’s tenure as an on-field player for the Browns has been disappointing, with him often looking like “a shell of his former self.” Yet, his past talent and “great mind for the game” make him uniquely qualified to step into this mentorship role.
This contribution is seen as a welcome positive for a fanbase used to seeking silver linings. By serving as a mentor, Watson becomes a “somewhat valuable member of the roster,” and avoids the “alternative of pouting and acting difficult.”
This role could ultimately help the entire offense get back on track and potentially set Watson up for another chance in the NFL once his massive contract is off the books after 2026.
