Dallas Cowboys All-Pro guard Tyler Smith is closing in on his 2026 debut against Tampa Bay, potentially giving Dak Prescott a critical boost Thursday night.
FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys could be getting their biggest offensive reinforcement of the season just in time for Thursday Night Football.
All-Pro left guard Tyler Smith is on the verge of returning to the Cowboys’ lineup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, potentially ending a four-game absence following surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his thumb.

Smith returned to practice Monday after Dallas opened his 21-day practice window, marking his first official on-field participation since undergoing surgery before the regular season.
The three-time Pro Bowler progressed from limited participation Monday and Tuesday to a full practice Wednesday, clearing a significant hurdle toward making his 2026 debut.
And his return couldn’t come at a better time.
Dallas enters Thursday’s matchup at 2-2 following an emotional 34-30 comeback victory over the Houston Texans. Quarterback Dak Prescott and an offense featuring CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Javonte Williams are beginning to establish momentum.
Adding Smith to the offensive line could make that unit considerably more dangerous.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones recently emphasized the importance of getting his All-Pro guard back.
“A guy like Tyler Smith is gonna give you that extra second to make plays downfield,” Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
That extra protection could be particularly valuable against Tampa Bay’s defensive front, featuring imposing defensive tackle Vita Vea.
Smith’s absence forced Dallas to rely on T.J. Bass at left guard during the opening four games. Bass provided needed depth, but Smith’s combination of strength, athleticism and experience gives the Cowboys an established difference-maker in the trenches.
His presence could also create additional running lanes for Williams, who scored three rushing touchdowns against Houston.
The Buccaneers arrive in Arlington winless at 0-4 and without injured starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.
For Dallas, the opportunity is obvious: Win a second straight game, move above .500 and build momentum before returning to a difficult NFC schedule.

Getting Smith back on the field would make that assignment considerably easier.
